Fearless Females: Generations of religious women in Devon, UK

I am participating in the Fearless Females theme to honour National Women's History Month.  Today we were asked what role religion played in our families; as far back as I have researched on the MURCH line, women either married into a Nonconformist religious atmosphere, or were searching for the truth themselves.  Here they are in Ottery St Mary, Bovey Tracey, and Chudleigh (all in Devon), beginning with my 6th great-grandmother::

Elizabeth Bastin: bap 1720, married Gideon Murch 21 July 1744
Margaret Marshall,: b abt 1749, mar Samuel Murch, previously married Richard Littley (very religious family who appear regularly in the Nonconformist records) on 26 December 1774
Eleanor Bending: bur 1834, married to Samuel Murch 14 March 1791 (2nd wife after Margaret died)
Mary Bending: baptised on Boxing Day 1785, married Samuel Murch16 September 1799
Johanna Yeates married Samuel Murch 5 August 1828
Johanna Murch and John Haywood, married 30 September 1869 in Independent Meeting House, Ottery St Mary

  1. Hello Ros,
I wrote you a while back and you asked me to send you more information on my Murch family ancestors. Namely Thomas Murch 1832-1872 He was born in Ashburton and living in Islington when he married Susanna Winsor Murch (listed as spinster)and she was living in Manaton. His father's name was John Murch (birth 1790) and he is listed as a sailor (I think) and his mother's name was Mary Bonamy Murch, she was born in 1798 in Hackney Middlesex and died in 1873.

Thomas was married prior to marrying Susanna. He is listed as a widower on his Marriage License. His first wife was Elizabeth Stark Murch, he married her May 12, 1855 in the Wesleyan Chapel in Newton Abbot, they had two children Charles 1856, and Susanna 1858, they lived in Illsington. Thomas worked as a Wesleyan Preacher, he was also listed as a Corwainer/shoemaker and later he was listed as a tea dealer. Elizabeth and Thomas's son went to live with the maternal grandmother after Elizabeth died. (I recently was mailed this information).

I thought originally Thomas probably died from Small Pox because 1872 was a bad year for that, but he died from Pulmonary Tuberculosis on Feb. 16th.

I think thomas's grandparents were John and Sarah murch but not sure.

Also Mary Bonamy Murch's parents I believe are Thomas Bonamy born 1765, and Ann Maria Moseley Bonamy. I believe that Thomas Bonamy's mother is Sarah Guest Bonamy and Ann Maria Moseley Bonamy's parents are believed to be Michael and Elizabeth Moseley.

It would be interesting to see what happened to thomas's first two children from his first wife, and see what caused Elizabeth's death.

I'm interested in tracing family back, to share with the rest of my family/relatives, so little was known before I started research, which not knowing much about researching was a very painful process and a little bit of luck. From what I know of the Murch's, they are a tough, hard working bunch of people with a strong faith in God.
Thanks, Stacy Murch Arnold at robstacy@bresnan.net
